Predictive 2022 NBA Mock Draft 1.0

Written by Tim Smith

While predicting exactly how the NBA draft will unfold eight months out is a tall task to follow and one of near impossibility, it isn’t without its benefits. So today, we’ll take a look at how the draft class stacks up stock-wise before the college season begins and speculate just how the NBA draft could unfold if it were to take place today.

There are a handful of prospects that I would personally consider first-round talents, such as Jaylin Williams (Arkansas) and Gabriele Procida. However, this mock draft reflects how the draft could realistically unfold rather than what I would necessarily do.

Vegas betting odds determine the team draft order for the sake of simplicity, and all traded picks are taken into account.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder - Paolo Banchero, PF, Duke

Height: 6’10” | Weight: 250 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

With no clear-cut consensus choice to go first overall, momentum appears to favor Duke’s Paolo Banchero. Bolstering a tank-like frame, Banchero has the strength and size to bang down low and get to the rim. Coupled with his physicality, Banchero’s main appeal is his versatility as a frontcourt scoring option. Banchero took major strides in his outside shooting and ball-handling in his senior season, becoming an eminent perimeter shot creator off the dribble. He also excels in isolation with his ability to create facing up on the wing, in the high-post, or out of the triple threat. While he doesn’t necessarily possess exceptional burst, his powerfully decisive rips, footwork, and threat to pull-up allow him to get to his spots. Banchero projects as a potential frontcourt hub of creation. He is a more than willing passer, even showcasing some potential creating out of the pick and roll and being a proficient live-dribble creator at the high school level.

2. Houston Rockets - Chet Holmgren, C, Gonzaga

Height: 7’0” | Weight: 195 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Freshman

Fresh off of winning the MVP of the FIBA under-19 world cup, Chet Holmgren is in the conversation for the first overall pick. Holmgren fits the new wave of lanky, floor-spacing big men prospects entering the league, similar to Kristaps Porziņģis, Aleksej Pokuševski, Evan Mobley, and Mo Bamba - hopefully being closer to the three former than the latter. Compared to this crop, Holmgren is on the more offensively gifted side, particularly at this point in his development. While being a viable shooter from deep, Chet is also comfortable putting the ball on the deck and has shown flashes of impressive transition ball-handling and live-dribble decision-making that stand out for a player of his stature and age, considering his position. Additionally, Chet is an impactful defensive presence in the paint, with intimidating verticality due to his 7’6” wingspan and adept timing as a rim protector.

3. Orlando Magic - Jalen Duren, C, Memphis

Height: 6’11” | Weight: 250 lbs | Current Age: 17 | Freshman

A late addition to 2022 preseason draft boards, Jalen Duren reclassified to the 2021 high school class, making him the youngest player in this first-round mock draft, edging out Yannick Nzosa by three days. Duren is a strong-bodied big with an NBA-ready body, standing at 6’11”, 250 lbs, and a 7’5” wingspan. These physical advantages are clear on both ends of the court as Duren exerts a staunch post presence with a soft touch but possesses the explosiveness and reach to be an astute vertical spacer. Duren is a high-motor big who runs the floor and gets off the ground quickly to crash the offensive and defensive boards. On the other end, Duren is an excellent weakside shot blocker, combining verticality and pop with a solid understanding of rotations. While Duren can knock down a mid-range faceup, expanding upon his offensive arsenal will be important towards cementing himself as a top-five pick.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers - AJ Griffin, SF, Duke

Height: 6’6” | Weight: 222 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

Out of the consensus top tier of players contending for the number one pick, AJ Griffin is the most mysterious. Sidelined by lower-body injuries for the tail end of his high school career, Griffin’s draft stock was put on hold. Multi-positional wing creators are in vogue, and Griffin fits the bill for this categorisation due to his defensive versatility and three-level shot creation. Griffin is a powerful wing with a sturdy frame and an improved handle for a wing, which allows him to create opportunities to score inside and outside. On the other side of the ball, he is an aggressive defender with some rim protection qualities on the wing. Griffin is a relative unknown at this stage in his development due to having missed his entire senior season and part of his junior year. Due to this, it is hard to say what version of AJ Griffin we will see at Duke this season and to project how far along he has developed since his u-16 days.

5. Detroit Pistons - Jaden Hardy, SG, G League Ignite

Height: 6’4” | Weight: 190 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Professional

Jaden Hardy is what Kendrick Perkins would call a hooper - a true bucket-getter in every sense of the phrase. Aiming to follow in the footsteps of G League Alum Jalen Green, Hardy rounds out the tier of players I believe to be in contention for the first overall selection to begin the season. Hardy is a tremendous self-creator on the perimeter with deep NBA range off the bounce. There does not appear to be a spot on the floor that Hardy struggles to score or create from, and he is already more than capable of nailing jump shots with a high degree of difficulty from just about anywhere. There will be questions for Hardy to answer regarding how much he’ll be able to contribute towards creating for others with the ball in his hands, which will be vital towards unlocking his potential as a true primary initiator.

6. San Antonio Spurs - Patrick Baldwin Jr., SF/PF Milwaukee

Height: 6’9” | Weight: 220 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

Patrick Baldwin Jr. decided to stay local and play for Milwaukee under his father, making him the highest-ranked recruit in Horizon League history. Tall shooters are a hot commodity in the NBA, and Baldwin Jr. has been on the NBA radar for that specific reason for several years already. At 6’9” with fluid, high release, without exaggeration, Baldwin Jr. could develop into one of the NBA’s top shooting forwards. He is an excellent spot-up option, equally as serviceable a shooter off the dribble and off movement. Baldwin Jr. will likely be entrusted with primary ball-handling responsibilities at Milwaukee and will have the green light as their go-to scoring option. Whether Baldwin Jr. can prove to be a capable self-creating option will be what makes or breaks his chances of climbing into the top five of this class.

7. Minnesota Timberwolves - Jabari Smith Jr., PF, Auburn

Height: 6’10” | Weight: 220 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

Jabari Smith Jr has always struck me as the most under-discussed of the consensus top of the class. Mobility and floor spacing stand front and center in Smith Jr’s game, making him the epitome of the modern-day power forward. Smith Jr. stands out as a face-up four, where he is confident in rising up over the defense out to three-point range or taking his defender off the dribble and using his long strides to get to the basket. His mobility is also evident on the defensive end of the ball, where Smith Jr. has shown flashes of being able to step out on the perimeter and contain dribble-drive penetration while also being a serviceable rim protector who can defend in space. In a way, Jabari Smith Jr. resembles a super-charged JT Thor, so it will be interesting to see how Auburn utilises Smith Jr. compared to how they did with Thor.

8. Sacramento Kings - Caleb Houstan, SF, Michigan

Height: 6’8” | Weight: 205 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

The NBA loves to put players into the 3&D box, but Caleb Houstan may eclipse that categorisation. An excellent three-point marksman, Houstan has a picturesque shooting form and knocks down spot-up looks from just about anywhere on the floor. Physically, Houstan brings NBA-level size to the small forward position and is a great defender with a knack for racking up steals, whether by tipping the ball loose from ball-handlers or by jumping passing lanes. The development of his ball-handling and assertiveness has already begun to open up his finishing and ability to get to the rim. If you couple this with his growing comfort in shooting off-the-dribble from an already impressive jump shooter, it is easy to see Houstan's developmental appeal. An absurdly out-of-character cold shooting stretch with the Canadian under-19 squad shouldn't put a dent in the body of work and reputation Houstan established at Montverde Academy.

9. Toronto Raptors - Yannick Nzosa, C, Unicaja

Height: 6’11” | Weight: 215 lbs | Current Age: 17 | International

After a rough start to the season, Yannick Nzosa’s draft stock appears to have tumbled ever so slightly. However, it is far too early to take him outside of the top ten, even if his recent performances suggest otherwise. Nzosa’s incredible movement ability for a big man spearheads his NBA appeal. Nzosa runs the floor hard and frequently, always being the first down the court in transition and the first back on defense. This agility translates well defensively as he projects as a plus-defender in space, capable of hedging and recovering with the best of them and absorbing space with his absurd length and quickness. Despite all this, offensively, Nzosa is one of the most underwhelming prospects there is. He lacks any creation ability outside of using his agility and length to attack off-rip, and his jump shot and offensive processing don’t bear much promise for the future. Nzosa does do a great job of slipping screens and running to the rim, but eventually, he’ll need to slow down and actually set the screen.

10. Washington Wizards - Jean Montero, PG, Overtime Elite

Height: 6’2” | Weight: 172 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Professional

Already a draft twitter favourite, Jean Montero will be the marquee prospect headlining the Overtime Elite League in its inaugural season. Montero is a showman of a lead-guard, playing with a flashiness, burst, and creativity that few guard prospects possess. His slithery playstyle is almost intuitive, as his feel for the game and body control make him a highly dynamic ball handler. Montero comes equipped with a layup package of floaters, scoops and strong finishes that make him a hard case to handle attacking the paint. This shiftiness allows Montero to catch the defense off-guard, where he can whip quick feeds to his open teammates with a level of flamboyance. Despite his percentages, Montero is a capable shooter and shot creator from deep. However, he will need to learn over time that style points are not awarded for missing shots with a higher degree of difficulty.

11. Indiana Pacers - Nikola Jović, PF/SF, Mega Basket
Height: 6’10” | 205 lbs | Current Age: 18 | International

While he was already a prominent name in the 2022 draft class, Nikola Jović’s impressive showing at the under-19 world cup vaulted his stock comfortably into the late-lottery discussion and has warranted some top-10 buzz for the Serbian combo-forward. Armed with a quick-trigger catch-and-shoot release, Jović is a crafty shooter at a lanky 6’10”. While already great at spotting up, he has made strides as a self-creator, having nimble footwork side-stepping or stepping back into his shot. Possessing some point-forward tendencies, Jović is very much a swiss army knife on offense, being able to lead the fastbreak and firing off some wickedly accurate cross-court finds. Jović will need to prove himself on the defensive end of the ball. But, at the end of the day, he already has LeBron’s patented gestured disapproval towards the referees down pact.

12. New Orleans Pelicans - Peyton Watson, SG/SF, UCLA

Height: 6’8” | Weight: 200 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Freshman

A wiry, lengthy wing defender, UCLA’s Peyton Watson hounds opposing ball handlers with his reported seven-foot wingspan. Defense seems to be Watson’s calling card as a prospect, where he projects to be highly capable of defending guards and forwards with his combination of size, quickness, and hustle. Watson does a great job on straight-line drives and cutting off the ball, where he is a lob target at nearly all times. At the under-19 world cup, Watson’s offensive production was less than ideal. Watson should look to dismiss these concerns by demonstrating an ability to project as a solid complementary piece on offense.

13. Memphis Grizzlies - Ousmane Dieng, SG/SF, NZ Breakers

Height: 6’9” | Weight: 185 lbs | Current Age: 18 | International

Ousmane Dieng turned heads by becoming the first European prospect to sign with the Australian NBL’s Next Stars programme. The French swingman will be suiting up for the New Zealand Breakers, who showcased first-round selection RJ Hampton two seasons ago. Dieng is a fluid athlete and ball-handler who proved to be more than comfortable creating for himself on the perimeter in the NM1. Dieng has a lot of appeal with the ball in his hands due to his playmaking chops, as he has had some impressive one-play-ahead finds and pick-and-roll possessions. However, shooting 34% from the field in France, Dieng will need to address his horrid finishing at the basket to truly unlock the rest of his offensive game, which, if done, could warrant a rise into the upper lottery.

14. Portland Trailblazers - Daimion Collins, C, Kentucky

Height: 6’9” | Weight: 202 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

The term “freak athlete” is an overused phrase, but it applies when discussing Kentucky commit Daimion Collins. Collins is a high-flying big man that you can bet on to provide a fair share of marvelling athletic plays per game. He plays much larger than his 6’9” frame, boasting a near 7’6” wingspan and having the leaping ability to excel as a vertical spacer. Collins’ above-the-rim play makes him a constant putback threat and lob target both in the half-court and transition. Collins’ verticality translates to the defensive end of the ball as he is a prominent rim protector and floater-snatcher. That being said though, Collins has had moments of improved ball-handling and intriguing off-the-dribble floor-spacing. From now on, the focus will be on whether Collins can be a contributor beyond being a play finisher or whether his flashes are simply just that - flashes.

15. Charlotte Hornets - Kennedy Chandler, PG, Tennessee

Height: 6’0” | Weight: 172 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Freshman

Like several other upcoming selections, Kennedy Chandler will look to separate himself from the pack as the top available point guard in the 2021 draft class. Chandler is a speedy, shifty guard with a nose for turning the corner and getting downhill at ease despite his lack of size. As an eyes-up playmaker, Chandler looks to get his teammates involved and has a sound understanding of angles and how to use his gravity to create opportunities for those around him. Furthermore, Chandler has added deep shooting range to his bag, which helps compensate for his lack of size at just 6’0”.

16. New York Knicks - Matt Cleveland, SF, Florida State

Height: 6’7” | Weight: 200 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Freshman

Matt Cleveland fits the criteria for your run-of-the-mill Seminoles prospect, checking all the boxes for possessing plus-length, being an active defender, and having developing ball-skills that instil optimism for future development. Starting with his defense, Cleveland has a functionality to his athletic tools that allow him to impact the game defensively, where he shows excellent activity and quality instincts. Additionally, his flexibility and burst enable him to get to the rim with relative ease. However, learning to play a little less recklessly downhill could be handy moving forward. Cleveland’s handle and jump shot are developing nicely alongside his natural slashing talents and could be the swing factors that ultimately determine his draft position.

17. Chicago Bulls - Roko Prkačin, PF, Cibona

Height: 6’9” | Weight: 225 lbs | Current Age: 18 | International

Had he remained in the 2021 NBA draft, Roko Prkačin would have been a lottery lock on our consensus big board rankings, as some writers even had him within their top-10s. However, after not receiving the interest he wanted from NBA front offices, Prkačin returned to the Adriatic league for another season in the hopes of getting the proper recognition he deserves. Prkačin is an intelligent do-it-all forward on offense, stretching the floor, finishing in various ways around the rim, and being an adept distributor of the basketball for a four-man. His shooting is best displayed in his proficiency as a pick-and-pop forward, which is made more threatening with his ability to attack hard closeouts and create off of penetration either for himself at the rim or threading the needle to cutters.

18. Boston Celtics - TyTy Washington, PG, Kentucky

Height: 6’3” | Weight: 197 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

TyTy Washington is a high-pace lead guard who rocketed up recruitment rankings into NBA draft consideration. Washington is a confident shot-creator from all three levels, displaying a tight handle that allows him to get deep paint touches and shake his defender loose to get into his jumper. Daimion Collins and TyTy Washington should make for an exciting duo to watch at Kentucky this season, particularly in transition opportunities where both thrive. Defensively, Washington is pesky, using his plus-length to poke the ball loose and create transition opportunities.

19. Atlanta Hawks - Hunter Sallis, PG/SG, Gonzaga

Height: 6’5” | Weight: 175 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

The second Gonzaga Bulldog off the board in this mock draft, Hunter Sallis, is likely to play a significant role beside Chet Holmgren while sharing backcourt responsibilities with fellow draft prospect Nolan Hickman. An upper-tier athlete, Sallis combines fluidity and ferocity in his playstyle, which both attribute to his status as one of the better finishers among guard prospects available. In addition, Sallis is a well-rounded scoring guard, specialising in creating his in the midrange while also being a capable outside threat. Defensively, he combines his already mentioned athletic traits with quick hands and intensity to make impactful plays. However, to assert himself as a point guard or primary ball-handler at the next level, Sallis could do with refining his passing and becoming a more active playmaker.

20. Dallas Mavericks - Bennedict Mathurin, SG, Arizona

Height: 6’6” | Weight: 210 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Sophomore

Bennedict Mathurin should have been a first-round pick in 2021. It’s as simple as that. However, Mathurin should get the opportunity his sophomore year to demonstrate his value to NBA front offices. Mathurin’s spot-up shooting is his most eye-catching skill as he provides a decent amount of shooting versatility. Whether catching on a swing, stepping into the shot, or off of movement and screen action, Mathurin is highly consistent in his form and provides efficient results. With a great NBA frame for an off-guard, Mathurin is also a superb athlete, able to thrive in transition and use his tools to create inside opportunities. Tightening up his handle to truly make use of his dribble-drive game and off-the-dribble creation will be essential to his development as a scorer this season and going forth.

21. Houston Rockets (via MIA) - Dyson Daniels, PG/SG, G League Ignite

Height: 6’6” | Weight: 175 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Professional

Australian basketball is making a name as a hotspot for young NBA talent, and Dyson Daniels could be the next in line. Daniels passed up on college and NBL opportunities to join the G League Ignite, an unexpected decision but a great one nonetheless. At the under-19 world cup, Daniels’ dexterity and creativity around the rim were on full display. With plus-positional size, he is capable of playing either guard position on both ends of the floor. In the pick-and-roll, his potential is still relatively untapped as he is a more than competent playmaker that plays with pacing, patience, and balance that is underappreciated. Daniels’ jump shooting is still a work in progress, but his touch around the rim, particularly on floaters, generates optimism for the jump shot coming around.

22. Denver Nuggets - Jaden Ivey, SG, Purdue

Height: 6’4” | Weight: 200 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Sophomore

One of the top returning prospects to college basketball, Jaden Ivey, is fresh off an under-19 gold medal and primed to take a leap forward his sophomore season. Ivey figures to be a do-it-all utility guard, capable of contributing in several areas of the game. He’s at his best getting to the rim and converting using his plus-athletic traits to create advantages. Being an annoyance of a defender, Ivey can apply pressure to guards and wings and provide solid defensive coverage. Ivey’s jump shot remains a work in progress as he shot under 30% from deep in both his freshman season and at the under-19 world cup. Despite this, Ivey has confidence and comfort in creating these opportunities for himself and isn’t a mechanically bad spot-up shooter per se.

23. Philadelphia 76ers - Kendall Brown, SF, Baylor

Height: 6’8” | Weight: 205 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

Uber-athleticism is the name of the game for Kendall Brown. The soon to be Baylor freshman is an intelligent off-ball mover with an instinctual feel for cutting into good positions to be fed the ball. Brown makes a living in transition and getting downhill where his length and explosiveness make him a danger to jump with whether in space or traffic. Unlike other stereotypical hyper-athletic wings, Brown isn’t necessarily a poor shooter and has some real creation flashes that could amount to something one day. His athletic talents translate to defensive functionality where Brown’s switchability will be highly sought out from NBA front offices.

24. Oklahoma City Thunder (via LAC) - Max Christie, SG, Michigan State

Height: 6’6” | Weight: 170 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

Michigan State’s Max Christie appears to be one of the purer shooters available in the 2022 draft class. Christie plays with an aesthetically pleasing smoothness to his game, excelling as a spot-up shooter and having a sleek dribble package for a wing. Christie is a prominent shooter with definite NBA range. He loves to create in the middle of the floor and get to his spots in the midrange, where he has the balance to stop on a dime and the length to shoot over the defense. There are still question marks surrounding Christie’s ability to contribute at a high level outside of his perimeter shot creation and shooting. However, if Christie can answer concerns, he could see himself cracking the lottery come draft night.

25. Memphis Grizzlies (via UTA) - Jabari Walker, PF, Colorado

Height: 6’8” | Weight: 200 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Sophomore

Known for lighting up Georgetown from deep and shattering a backboard with a dunk in Costa Rica, Jabari Walker should see an uptick in minutes with the Colorado Buffaloes. Being a solid NBA-level athlete with sound physical tools and potential switchability on defense, Walker has significant intrigue as a roll/fade option long-term. Walker shot a blistering 52% from three his freshman season. While 50%+ efficiency is realistically unsustainable on increased volume, it is still wildly encouraging for Walker’s development as a floor-spacing four.

26. Oklahoma City Thunder (via PHX) - Keegan Murray, SF/PF, Iowa

Height: 6’8” | Weight: 215 lbs | Current Age: 21 | Sophomore

Keegan Murray was hidden behind NBA draft selections Luka Garza and Joe Wieskamp his freshman season at Iowa. With their departure, Murray should see an uptick in usage and be league-bound sooner rather than later. Murray is more of a smooth than a powerful athlete and possesses prototypical size for an NBA forward. Murray’s physical tools make him an efficient finisher in the paint and a capable rim protector for a forward. Increasing his catch-and-shoot efficiency should be the focus for Murray his sophomore year, really asserting himself as capable of playing the sought after 3&D role in the league.

27. Golden State Warriors - Nolan Hickman, PG, Gonzaga

Height: 6’2” | Weight: 185 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Freshman

A smooth pick and roll operator, Nolan Hickman could rise up draft boards with a successful season on a loaded Gonzaga team, potentially working his way up to the lottery. Hickman controls the pace of the game, capable of whipping accurate passes with either hand and breaking his defender off the dribble. In addition, Hickman has some serious three-level scoring upside as he is not afraid to pull up on a dime, whether it be from the elbow or creating from the three-point line. It will be interesting to see how Hickman and Hunter Sallis share ball-handling responsibilities at Gonzaga. Both could potentially make a case for being the class’ best point guard in a weak year for the position.

28. Milwaukee Bucks - Jordan Hall, SG/SF, Saint Joseph’s

Height: 6’8” | Weight: 210 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Sophomore

Initially intending to transfer to Texas A&M, Jordan Hall ultimately decided to return to Saint Joseph’s for another season. Hall had a freshman campaign under-discussed relative to the production and versatility he displayed for the Hawks. At 6’8”, Hall can be classed as a jumbo-playmaker, putting up 5.7 assists per game and proving to be a patient and intelligent passer, hitting cutters, corners, and the roll man in stride. There were also encouraging signs of scoring off the dribble in confidence; however, boosting that efficiency, particularly around the rim, will be key for Hall this upcoming season.

29. Memphis Grizzlies (via LAL) - Kadary Richmond, SG, Seton Hall

Height: 6’6” | Weight: 200 lbs | Current Age: 20 | Sophomore

Kadary Richmond’s freshman year at Syracuse got the ball rolling in discussions of his NBA potential. After transferring to the Seton Hall Pirates, Richmond will look to cement his name in the first-round conversation officially. Richmond is creative with the ball in his hands, having some shake and pacing to get his way to the basket and being one of the better passing guards creating off of penetration. With a reported 6’10” wingspan, he has disruptive length and shares a knack for being active in the passing lanes. Look for Richmond to take a leap this season and potentially climb his way up the first round.

30. Miami Heat (via BKN) - J.D. Davison, PG, Alabama

Height: 6’3” | Weight: 190 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Freshman

One of the more well-known freshmen due to the circulation of his highlight reels on social media, J.D. Davison, is a dynamo of an athlete, bringing explosiveness to the point guard position like no other lead-guard within this draft class. The big question mark for Davison in his freshman year will be showing whether his athletic prowess translates into two-way production at Alabama. Word has gotten around that Davison has already impressed Nate Oats and his staff by taking on sizable playmaking responsibility in scrimmages.

31. Oklahoma City Thunder - Michael Foster, PF/C, G League Ignite
Height: 6’9” | Weight: 220 lbs | Current Age: 18 | Professional

32. Cleveland Cavaliers (via HOU) - Marcus Bagley, SF/PF, Arizona State
Height: 6’8” | Weight: 220 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Sophomore

Height: 6’8” | Weight: 220 lbs | Current Age: 20 | Junior

Height: 6’11” | Weight: 245 lbs | Current Age: 19 | Sophomore

Height: 6’6” | Weight: 188 lbs | Current Age 18 | International
