TLB ‘22 Draft Non-Conference Viewing Guide

Written by Garrett Johnson

Interested in scouting the 2022 NBA Draft Class this coming college season? Start here. Each draft cycle, I put together a list of marquee games that I can watch throughout the year to scout top NBA prospects, and this year I’m sharing the 2021 calendar year portion of it with TLB readers. In the guide below, I cover the most important teams to watch in the college non-conference schedule, the biggest early-season tournaments, and most importantly, I’m sharing a full schedule of the best games to watch in 2021 to evaluate prospects for the 2022 Draft. Hope this helps everyone get prepped for what should be a fun draft cycle!

[Click here to skip ahead to the full schedule of games.]

MUST-WATCH TEAMS IN NON-CONFERENCE

What do I consider a must-watch team in the non-conference? These five teams play in conferences that are a step below power conference competition, and each team has one or more clearly draftable players that you’ll be glad you got the chance to watch against high-level competition early in the draft cycle.

GONZAGA

High-Level Prospects: Chet Holmgren, Hunter Sallis, Nolan Hickman

Watchlist: Andrew Nembhard, Drew Timme, Anton Watson

Gonzaga has a tough non-conference slate every year. This season is one of their toughest, and that’s important, because the WCC will once again provide little resistance to the Bulldogs. With arguably six relevant Gonzaga prospects this year, it’ll be important to start scouting early.

Key Games:

TEXAS @ GONZAGA 11.13

GONZAGA vs UCLA 11.23

DUKE vs GONZAGA 11.26

ALABAMA vs GONZAGA 12.4

GONZAGA vs TEXAS TECH 12.18

MARSHALL

Watchlist: Taevion Kinsey

Taevion Kinsey was a draftable prospect last year, but Marshall’s soft schedule made scouting him tough. This year is no different. Kinsey’s athleticism just gives him too much of an advantage against C-USA opponents, so his game against Indiana will be circled by every interested NBA scout.

Key Games:

MARSHALL @ INDIANA 11.27

NORTHERN IOWA @ MARSHALL 12.18

Memphis_Tigers_logo.png

MEMPHIS

High-Level Prospects: Jalen Duren, Emoni Bates (eligible in ‘23 Draft)

Watchlist: Josh Minott, Earl Timberlake

Memphis will have tests in the AAC from teams like Houston, SMU, and Wichita State, but the two best prospect games on their schedule come earlier in the season against Alabama and Tennessee. The two big names for the Tigers are Emoni Bates (eligible in ’23 Draft) and Jalen Duren (’22). But, don’t count out guys like Earl Timberlake, Josh Minott, and others who could shine playing next to college stars.

Key Games:

MEMPHIS vs VIRGINIA TECH 11.24

Potential tournament match-up vs. Xavier 11.26

MEMPHIS @ OLE MISS 12.4

MEMPHIS vs ALABAMA 12.14

MEMPHIS vs TENNESSEE 12.18

MILWAUKEE

High-Level Prospect: Patrick Baldwin Jr.

Patrick Baldwin Jr. is going to have a tough challenge ahead of him playing under his father at UW-Milwaukee this season. Being a potential lottery talent on a small-conference team means defenses will be gunning for him all year, and the opportunities to showcase his talents against high-level competition will be infrequent, especially if Milwaukee misses out on the postseason. Milwaukee’s third-toughest game this season may be against Rhode Island, a very average squad in the Atlantic 10, so take advantage of early-season opportunities to scout.

Key Games:

MILWAUKEE @ FLORIDA 11.18

MILWAUKEE @ COLORADO 12.10

RHODE ISLAND @ MILWAUKEE 12.13

SAINT JOSEPH’S

Watchlist: Jordan Hall

After withdrawing early in the 2021 draft process, Jordan Hall announced he would transfer to Texas A&M, but then reversed course and returned to Saint Joseph’s. The Atlantic 10 slate will provide opportunities to watch Hall in-action this year, but I recommend watching him play against power conference competition if you can.

Key Games:

ST JOSEPHS vs USC 11.25

Early season tournament vs. Georgetown or San Diego State 11.26

ST JOSEPHS @ VILLANOVA 12.4

KEY EARLY-SEASON TOURNAMENTS

Rather than weigh down the main Viewing Guide schedule with theoretical matchups that might occur in some of college basketball’s early-season tournaments, I’m going to spend some time here highlighting the tournaments most likely to produce marquee prospect matchups, sorted by start date.

Roman Main Event 11.19-11.21

If Michigan and Arizona play, that game would be a must-watch involving multiple high-level prospects (Ben Mathurin, Caleb Houstan) and a slew of other potential drafted players. Bryce Hamilton is a fringe prospect for UNLV, and if he’s going to enter draft discussions, a matchup with Caleb Houstan is the perfect opportunity. There is a similar pressure for Tyson Etienne, who will lead Wichita State against a talent-laden Arizona squad that isn’t getting enough preseason attention from pundits.

Notable first round matchups:

Arizona vs Wichita State

Michigan vs UNLV

Hall of Fame Tip-Off 11.20-11.21

There are lots of interesting guard prospect matchups in this tournament, including Jaden Ivey (Purdue), Kennedy Chandler (Tennessee), Justin Moore (Villanova), and hopefully a revitalized Caleb Love (North Carolina). I highly recommend checking it out.

Notable first round matchups:

Tennessee vs Villanova

North Carolina vs Purdue

Battle 4 Atlantis 11.24-11.26

This is my favorite non-conference tournament this year, with every team (except maybe Arizona State and VCU) having a chance to put up a fight every night. Speaking of Arizona State, if you want to see Marcus Bagley before Pac-12 play, this is your best opportunity. Connecticut’s frontcourt defense should pose one of the toughest tests for Auburn’s Jabari Smith Jr. this season.

Notable first round matchups:

Arizona State vs Baylor

Auburn vs Connecticut

NIT Tip-Off 11.24-11.26

Watch this one for Memphis. The game vs Virginia Tech should be a great test for the team, and a matchup against Xavier would be ideal. Iowa State has Tyrese Hunter on their squad, so all four teams have potential prospects.

Notable first-round matchup:

Memphis vs Virginia Tech

Iowa State vs Xavier

ESPN Events Invitational 11.25-11.28

The only first round matchup here with prospects on both teams is Miami-Dayton (Isaiah Wong and DaRon Holmes), and they aren’t going to be matched-up throughout the game. This tournament does represent maybe the best opportunity to watch Dayton this season, however. I’d be interested to see Isaiah Wong and Miami against Kansas’ backcourt, and an Alabama-Kansas final is what most fans will be clamoring for.

Notable first round matchup:

Dayton vs Miami FL

OVERTIME ELITE

A quick note on Overtime Elite, which starts on October 29th. This is the first year of the Overtime Elite program, and I’m still figuring out what the best way to scout prospects in the system will be. The main 2022 prospect in this year’s Overtime Elite program is Jean Montero, and he will be playing for Team Gomes. There is a lack of clarity around the draft eligibility of some of the other OTE prospects who would like to be in the 2022 class, namely brothers Amen and Ausar Thompson. Regardless of how that resolves, this program has plenty of talent in it that will be relevant for the foreseeable future, so it’s worth watching.

If you want to see the OTE schedule, check it out on their website here. Otherwise, I won’t be including OTE in the viewing schedule that follows this section. The volume of games on their schedule is large, and the lack of communication about how much of the schedule will be broadcasted makes it difficult to choose which games to highlight.

SCHEDULE OF GAMES

What’s included here: college non-conference games through the end of 2021, early-season college tournament reminders, G League Ignite 2021 schedule.

What’s missing here: Overtime Elite schedule, relevant international games, non-conference college games in 2022 (i.e. Big 12-SEC Challenge)

Keep in mind I’ve focused on non-conference games. Some NCAA teams begin conference play in 2021, but I haven’t included those games here.

If you’re relying on this guide to inform you about every NCAA team with relevant prospects, I think it bears mentioning some squads that don’t have very interesting non-conference slates but are worth watching at some point this season. Relevant teams I haven’t mentioned anywhere in this guide: Arkansas (Davonte Davis, Jaylin Williams), Davidson (Hyunjung Lee), Georgia Tech (Michael Devoe), LSU (Efton Reid), Mississippi State (Iverson Molinar), Rutgers (Ron Harper Jr.), Vanderbilt (Scottie Pippen Jr.)
